     COLON - THE MAGIC CAPITAL

A trip to Colon is a magical adventure in more ways than one. Many consider it a modern day "Brigadoon", set apart from history and the modern age. Colon is also one of the most beautiful places on earth, hidden away behind acres and acres of farmland and in the heart of Amish territory. It was a land of mystery and magic long before the first magicians settled here and legend has it that it was a little bit of magic that brought Harry Blackstone to Colon in 1926.

The Blackstone Troupe was too large to stay in most housing so both Harry and his wife Inez were looking for something that would work for their troupe. Completely by chance, Inez drove her car south from Kalamazoo through farmlands that eventually led her into Colon. At the western edge of the village she noticed Angel Island in Sturgeon Lake that was for sale, and she placed a down payment on the property. Her husband Harry found that the island was ideally suited for his purposes and they fell in love with Colon. The island already had a frame house and a large barn where the stage equipment could be stored along with the animals that performed in the show. Near the shoreline of the island were several cottages which could be used as housing for his crew. A makeshift Church was also made out of the barn where the troupe could go and worship God.

Blackstone purchased the island that summer and from 1926 until 1949 Blackstone called Colon home and always claimed that he would rather live in Colon than anywhere else in the world.
